Matt Nussbaum joined the L&S Advisors team in 2017 and serves as a Portfolio Manager and Director of Research. In this role, he works closely with the other portfolio managers to identify investment opportunities. In addition, Matt is responsible for providing top-quality support to the firm’s growing list of high-net-worth investment clients.
As a portfolio manager with a growth mindset, Matt actively seeks out counter viewpoints and opinions when developing investment theories. As part of his process, he considers worst case scenarios and revises prior beliefs and forecasts according to Bayesian principles of probability and in-depth statistical analysis. His goal is to eliminate bias in mosaic development and decision making.
Prior to joining L&S Advisors, Matt worked at a registered investment advisor (RIA) in Newport, CA where he performed industry and company analysis, helping to guide the investment decisions of the portfolio managers.
Matt graduated with honors from the University of California, Los Angeles, where he received a B.A. in economics with a minor in accounting and has earned a Certificate in Pharmaceutical Management from Cornell University Sloan Graduate School of Public Health. He is Series 63/65 licensed and holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation. Matt is also a member of the the CFA Institute Advocacy Committee and annually mentors a student group in the CFA University Research Challenges. In addition, Matt is a guest lecturer in Bill Simon’s value investment program at UCLA Department of Economics and a volunteer with the CFA Institute as a Practice Analysis Working Body Committee Member. Matt is currently taking coursework in Physiology and Immunology at Harvard Medical School.
On the personal side
Matt was born and raised in West Philadelphia, but now lives in Bel-Air (no, he is not the Fresh Prince). In addition to his fiancée and seven-year-old son, his family includes an African Side-Neck turtle named Rafael.
Besides learning and making money for clients, Matt’s favorite activities include international travel, surfing, skiing, and diving (in fact, he’s a PADI certified rescue diver). He has hiked and climbed the tallest mountain in several continents. He and his son have also been known to instigate regular neighborhood water-balloon battles in the summer. Matt and his son are also die-hard Philadelphia Eagles fans.
Matt is passionate about advocating for healthcare rights and access for veterans, as well as all causes related to the Los Angeles Children’s Hospital. He is a member of the CFA Institute and the Los Angeles CFA Society. He is also a member of the UCLA Value Investment Society and Alumni Association.
